Look on the back of the V5. It tells you everything you need to know.0

Yes, the instructions are on the V5 and there's a more detailed guide in the leaflet that came with it, if you still have it.
OT: I lost my V5 so I had to write a letter to the DVLA instead. Before I sold the car I had him write his name and address down on a piece of paper, I didn't check it. When I got to writing the letter all I could make out was the first name "Sue" and the surname was just a squiggle. A search on 192.com didn't find anyone with the name Sue at that address. I just tried to read the squiggle as best as I could.0 -
You send section 1-8 (first page) to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BA.
Give new owner Section 10, destroy the rest (section's 9 and 11).
You will get confirmation letter of disposal within 4 weeks.
Hope that helps

Out of interest..
What if the buyer doesn't live in the UK, and intends to take export the vehicle?0 -

Then you would return Section 11 (notification of permanent export) with a covering letter stating that the new owner is exporting vehicle to whichever country.
New owner would take rest of V5C to re-register in new country.

Interesting answer, I've always wondered how to buy a car from France and bring it home, I hope they have a similar system in place.
Are you sure it is appropriate for the seller to complete and return section 11? Because the seller does not export the vehicle they cannot say for sure that it has been exported or give a date of export.0 -

If it is being exported straight away then yes the seller can put that day's date in export section and explain in covering letter that the new buyer is exporting it.
If it's not being exported straight away then it would be just like a normal private sale, filling out section 6 and 8, then the new owner would need to wait for the V5C to come in their name before exporting it, or they can apply to local DVLA Office for an export certificate using the V5C/2 in the interum (sp?) period.
Most people who buy cars to export seem to take them out same day/next day, unless they are the older classic cars which may need to be transported etc.
The V5C that we have here is issued EU wide so it looks the same in all EU countries. It makes things a bit easier for re-registration on importation, as all the info is in the same fields on form so no need to get translation of the documents!
If you want info on how to import a vehicle I can PM you the steps to follow. It can be a bit overwhelming as there are lots of bit's of paperwork that you need!
