Messed around by managing agents when claiming back our deposit

Please can anyone help

We were living in a rented house for roughly 8 months and now it has come time for the deposit to be returned we are having trouble with the managing agents.

We had an inventory done both before we moved in and when we left and in this there is really very little they could possibly take money off for, although it is difficult to argue it as the managing agents originally didn't give us a copy of the entire inventory and then delayed forwarding the leaving one on to us, so that it arrived after the 7 days we have to complain about anything in it.

The managing agents are also saying that there is outstanding rent but this is only the case as they didn't bother to cash the final cheque to them until we complained today so it seems they were holding off on this.

We also had problems with the house the whole time we were there with the boiler leaking acid and a gas safety certificate that seemed to have be faked, the celing collapsed and a pest problem that although numerous calls and letters nothing was ever sufficiently fixed and through out we were told the landlord knew the situation only to find out that he hadn't been informed about any off it.

You would think with everything the managing agents would be glad to see the back of us but they seem to be messing us around- we are now only going to communicated by letter so we have a copy of everything, but can anyone suggest anything that could help us out. ideally we don't want to take legal action but if it comes to it we will but we hope to sort it before it gets that far.

Any help will be gratefully appreciated

thank you

Write to the LL/LA informing her/him that you would like to receive the return of your deposit within the next 7 working days. Do you know which of the three deposit schemes your LlL/LAhas registered your deposit with?

At the start of your tenancy, your LL/LA should have given you what is called the "prescribed information" telling you how you go about getting your deposit back.

Was the inventory signed by both parties when you moved in?
  • Yes the inventory was signed by both of us and was done by a third party as well.
