Carboot buys to sell on ebay, help please

Options
Hi there

My daughter is poorly, she has bone cancer again, she was in remission for less than six months :-( anyway she cant work as she is in and out of hospital and has already has one huge operation with another planned for around Christmas.

So that the background. She is eighteen and gets barely any money to live on now she's on benefits and we have been thinking of ways she can earn money. I suggested she goes to car boots and buys things to sell on ebay as the listing and posting etc will keep her busy as well as generating a little income.

So my question is, what kind of thing can she buy? I know student books are a good buy but im not really sure about what else and cant really scan the whole of ebay whilst at the carboot!

I think this could be quite exciting for her, especially if she's earning from it. She gets bored and upset that shes stuck at home :-(

So any suggestions, whats been your best find, etc etc.

Someone that my OH works with does a lot of buying at car boot sales in order to sell the stuff on ebay. I think he mainly caters for the american market - jigsaws with "traditional British" pictures (eg York Minster) seem to go down well and tea towels (cheap to post).

Make sure that the text books/student books are quite current. I've sold quite a few on ebay just recently, however my OH's IT books from 2000 are thoroughly out of date and we're struggling to get rid of them!

  • Hi Leonie,

I'm sorry that your daughter isn't too good at the moment.

I'm going to have a good think about this and get back to you later, in the meantime have you had a look through the Amazon thread? it may be of some use to you / her. Secondly do you have a digital camera for ebay?, if yes, I'll come up with some ideas.

edit - is there a car available during the day time?

Hi Leonie, so sorry to hear about your daughter :(

I know this isn't what you were asking about, but have you checked that she's getting all the benefits she's entitled to? Has she claimed DLA which could provide a substantial amount in extra benefits? If you need them I can give you links to a couple of websites to have a look at, or you could pop over to the benefits board for some further advice.

Best of luck to you all xx :)

Does she know anything about using graphics programs like Paint Shop Pro?

I sell T shirts etc with slogans written on them through Cafepress.

This is my best selling shop.

I've made about $150 dollars over the past couple of years. I've never cashed it in, I use the cafecash to buy T shirts from my shop or other peoples.

You don't have to be artistic. Just find a good slogan and mae sure you put it in the right catagory with the right key words.

Also keep an eye out for free sim cards. They sell well on Ebay if you sell them in bulk.

    Also travel books on Amazon.

Thankyou everyone, I really do appreciate the replies and theres lots of things I had never even thought of. I really like the idea of buying 'british' goods and selling to the american market!

So lets see, yes I have a car and a camera so theres no problem there. She cannot commit to anything on a regular time ie doing something the same time every day as she is often in hospital or there visiting.

She used to be artistic as a child but struggles to focus her mind at the moment (as do we all, jeez its a tough ride)

Curry_Queen she gets DLA but all that goes on her car loan. She took out a £4000 car loan to help her get around as the cancer is in her legs and she's already had one leg pretty much replaced with metal. I know there are cheaper ways to travel, but walking isnt an option and busses means waiting around and she's not strong enough for that. Her car is her pride and joy and that has to stay.

On a positive note, we heard today that both of us are going to get a night at a health farm from a footballers charity! A nurse at the hospital nominated us! :T

Has your daughter thought of becoming a trading assistant?
Basically she photographs and lists other peoples bits for them. They pay all listings etc and they pay her for the privalidge.
Ive used a trading assistant in the past. As she has a camera etc theres no outlay beyong electric for her.
Id love another trading assistant but theres nobody where I live
Mad Mum to 3 wonderful children, 2 foster kittens and 2 big fat cats that never made it to a new home!
Aiming to loose 56 pounds this year. Total to date 44.5 pounds 12.5 to go. Slimming World Rocks!
  • hello again and congrats on the night away!

The reason I mentioned the car is to suggest mystery shopping, she could pick up and drop this as is convienient and will pay her around £10.00 per job
My ebay idea may seem a bit 'grown-up' for an 18 year old - china tablewares can be picked up at most boot sales and so long as she sticks to the good names like Wedgwood, Royal Doulton, Royal Worcester etc and makes sure that they are in excellent condition then she will be OK.
Has she signed up for Pigsback? she just needs to do a few clicks a day and she will 'earn' a £10.00 voucher for Boots etc every 2 or 3 weeks, I know that it's not much but the work involved is zero!
