Where do I stand with the Utility Warehouse regarding a supposed debt?

I lived in a property from September 06 Until June 07 in Leicestershire. During October/November 06 I moved the Gas and Electricity to Southern Electric from the Utility Warehouse and closed my accounts with them (or so I thought!). As far as I knew all my accounts were closed with the Utility Warehouse and I did not here from them again at that address from November until June 07.

Last week I received a debt collection notice for £68 from a debt collector working for the Utility Warehouse relating to an unpaid bill from November 2006 totally out of the blue. My argument is that I was at the property where they once supplied me energy for 7 months after my accounts were supposedly closed and I did not receive a single letter from them saying I owed them money. For all I know they could have made this £68 charge up. Does anyone have any advice as I have this debt collection agency breathing down my neck and I don't want my credit rating to take a hit. I have the money but think this is very odd to be chasing me for this money.

  • I don't suppose the exact amount is £68.98 by any chance?

That is the amount they charge in fees to outsource their debt!

I would go direct to UW and ask where the debt arose and for copy invoices.

My money is on the above, in which case your account would not be in debt!
  • It is £67.85, I am going to call them this afternoon to find out what the charges actually relate to and ask for copy invoices. I will let you know what happens.
