Does this sound dodgy to you?

I sold an item on ebay last night for £100. It is my first sale.
On my listing I stated that I would send only to the UK and that I preferred paypal as payment.

The winning bidder is registered with ebay in France and has a shipping address in Ireland (southern).

I am unsure whether to continue the sale as I understand that paypal wouldn't insure me as a seller (outside UK,US and Canada) and I cannot see any information on the Royal Mail site about sending an item of this size (its 7kg) to Ireland with insurance.

What do you think?

  • Doesn't sound particularly dodgy to me
    Check the buyers feedback

Some sellers have a policy of only posting to within their home country - - You opted worldwide so you're obliged to send the producct

Other sellers say please do not bid unless you have 6+ positive feedback

I live in ROI and when you search for anything all it brings up is UK based sellers

    Use this Royal Mail link

    http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/jump2?catId=400023&mediaId=11200122

Looks like the cost would be from £24 to £61 to post depending on the option you use

If you really don't want overseas bidders you must set your seller preferences accurately to refuse them.

Now you do have a foreign winner you are right in that it is unlikely that they will have a confirmed address so you would not be covered however you send the goods. However even though you don't need tracking for paypal's purposes you will still need to look at the higher insured postage options as standard airmail will only cover you up to £36 for loss..

  • So by stating that I will post only to UK, I haven't done that?

It looks like the postage will be £62 if I want it signed for (which I would!)

Am guessing (hoping!) the buyer may not want to go ahead.

    Nope, not according to ebay.
The only way to prevent a 'foreign' bidder is to set prefs to not allow outside UK.
However, if they're in Eire this might not cover it anyway (I can't recall if it's uk only or 'UK and Eire' only.)

If the buyer is in France, why is their listed home address still in Eire?
Only send to listed address whatever happens.
It's BOUGHT (to Buy), not BROUGHT (to bring) AND you cannot be frauded, only DEfrauded.

Please do not buy animals from a pet store. Visit your local sanctuary or centre and give a good home to an unloved or abandoned animal.

It's Republic of Ireland or Ireland or Eireann . Not Eire:mad:......

    Eire is seen as derogatory

    You can also use leprechaunia
  • Undersized rascal - as you are located in ROI, maybe you can help me out...

How do you usually pay for ebay purchases in the UK? Has anyone been funny with you about accepting paypal as a method of payment?

    My apologies.
I have no dealings with ROI, and 'Eire' as a derogatory term is the first I've heard.
