Go onto this website. Contact the LDS Church in your area. They have family history centres with people on duty who will get you started. They have a massive database. They will NOT Bible punch or try convert you.

    Their services are free.

This is free for Births,Marriage and Deaths, though only goes up to the late 1920s:

This is a free site for parish records, though not all areas are transcribed yet:

  • Some public libraries provide free access to sites like ancestry.com or it may be worth going to your local records office where they should be able to give you some guidence.
  • All the web sites suggested are good. However, first thing I ask people to do when I run beginners' workshops is what they want to find out and why and then I ask them to write down as much information as they already have.

Once you've done this you can see where the gaps are and start to think about how you might fill them in as you start to work backwards.

    Hi

You should definitely join genes reunited
    www.genesreunited.co.uk.

Putting your tree on there is free but once you want to send someone a msg it costs £10 for a year, but it will be money well spent IMHO. Within days of joining I had got back hundreds of years with many branches of my family. It is also worth using the community board on this site, as there are loads of people who will help you access census info & more importantly people who share info on various Parish Registers all over the country. It's truly fantastic. I am just about to renew for my third year.:D

    Hi

As well as all the internet sites you will want to buy software to hold your tree on your own computer. I bought Roots Magic from amazon which I think is great. I bought the deluxe edition but the extras were not worth the extra money so you would be better off buying just the basic package.

I am sure other posters can recommend other packages too. Whatever package you buy make sure it is gedcom compatible.

Couple of other free sites you could try
    www.familytreeforum.com
    www.ancestryaid.co.uk

Both offer friendly advice whatever the query and I''ve found them very useful.
If you live local to the area your ancestors come from you could consider joining the family history society. They'll be happy to help you even if you've moved away from the area.
Good luck...........its fun to do but be warned.....very addictive:j

Totally addictive - it's a hobby for life. My family have been working on our tree for 25 years:cool:
