Wall mounting TV onto plasterboard wall

I have just brought a new TV for the bedroom. Its a 20inch Sony Bravia and weighs
7kg. Can i just use 5 of these http://www.screwfix.com/prods/33559/Fixings/Cavity-Fixings/Fischer-HM-Metal-Plasterboard-Anchors-M5-x-37mm-Pack-of-20
to spread the load onto the wall?

Personally, I'd still be worried that these are still just being fixed into the plasterboard.

Can you fix horizontal supporting battens across two of the vertical studs and then fix the TV to these?

My 42" is attached using those no problems. Its also well worth buying the tool for them as well saves loads of time. see https://www.screwfix.com/prods/12429/Hand-Tools/Builders-Tools/Builders-Basics/Setting-Tool The gap between the wall and plaster board varies so much I usually drill into the back of the wall as well just to give clearance it work well.
My opinions are purely my own act on them at your own risk
  • excellent i figure 5 would be more than enough

The TV itself is actually quite light!

i have had a tap and haven't a clue where the studs are. its a fairly narrow wall too.

The Fischer Fixings you hae identified are a very good product. I.ve used them for many medium - heavy weight objects in peoples homes and have not had any problems./ Tr is wise - drill in to the wall slightly to ensure the depth of the hole is adequate. Looking for the stud work is fine but you can be guaranteed that it is never in the place that you want to fix something!

  • just drilled a tester hole and the plaster board seems to be about 2inches thick! i'm totally lost now

from what ive seen on av forums alot of people cut out the plasterboard where they want the tv, they then screw equal thickness mdf/ply onto the studs in the wall so it fills the hole and is flat again, then fill the slight gap round it and repaint / repaper, then you have a very secure bit of wood to hang the tv from, with only a 20 inch tv I am not sure you will always hit two studs (any one i dont know their spacing) so it might be less than ideal for you, but then again your tv is that much lighter, these guys where doing 42" plus.

It may sound like alot of mess but if you are considering burying the cables and power into the wall for a seamless install it might be worth the exra hastle.

Have you considered hanging it from the ceiling? Not as daft as it may sound, brackets are available on Ebay quite cheap, and it looks quite natty. My local hotel has several tv's done this way.

We want to hang our TV on the wall too, but it will have to go above a gas heater. The heater is one of these hole-in-the-wall things with a glass front fully enclosing the flames. Is it possible to hang it above a heater like this?

Also, what do you do with all the cables? How can you hide them neatly without gouging out half the walls? We've got 2 scart leads as well as the power, arial etc etc
