cancelling old credit cards

I always try to cancel any old credit cards not just cutting them up. Is there a way of finding out if there is any i have missed as i hate to think that my details could be still live on account i do not know about

Get a copy of your credit report - if it doesn't indicate 'settled' next to the credit card, then it hasn't been closed.
You can get a free copy if you sign up to Experian (Credit Expert) and cancel within the first 30 days.

Also if you have a Capital One card, you can get a free Equifax credit report.

So you're aware, Experian and Equifax are two credit agencies that are used by many of the financial institutions to check your credit record before they give you credit.0
