What banks do we hate?

I was bored so I thought I would see how many hits Google would give me for the words “I hate” followed by a bank or building society name. Not particulary scientific I know, but thought I would share the results. The first set are just the words the second is for an exact match.

I hate Lloyds 620,000
I hate Nationwide 451,000
I hate Abbey 437,000
I hate Halifax 360,000
I hate northern rock 313,000
I hate Royal Bank of Scotland 219,000
I hate HSBC 172,000
I hate Barclays 139,000
I hate ICICI 62,100
I hate Natwest, 42,400
I hate Alliance and Leicester 17,200
I hate Kaupthing Edge 441
I hate Icesave 393

"I hate HSBC" 366
"I hate Halifax" 225
"I hate Abbey" 182
"I hate Barclays" 176
"I hate Natwest" 139
"I hate Lloyds" 128
"I hate nationwide" 42
"I hate RBS" 37
"I hate ICICI" 36
"I hate northern rock" 6
"I hate A&L" and "I hate Alliance and Leicester " 3
“I hate Kaupthing Edge” 0
"I hate Icesave" 0

Lloyds is a big name so not surprising they are very high on the first search, just their name gives about 5.5 million hits! Alliance and Leicester seemed to do well in both cases, and there was very little about Kaup and Icesave. The bit that points out the futileness of this little test is northern rock, I was expecting there to be a whole lot more I hate northern rocks.

Hope this fills a few bored minutes as it did for me J

But presumably the "I hate" whatever without the quotes would also pull up "I just luvre" whatever "but hate it when they are slagged off" etc in the google lists..? (Im sure you can do stuff with + and/or quotes for each word to get an absolute match).

Even then, a quick add-up - if around 3 million out of 30 million+ do actually hate a specific bank, sure many companies would be over the moon about a 90%+ approval rating...

If you compare the number of hits (based on whole phrase) with the number of employees each bank has then this levels the playing field a bit. As in, the bigger the bank, the more employees it has, and (more's the point) the more customers it has - who might hate it!

So, HSBC has 366 'haters' and 330,000 employees (source Wikipedia). That's 901.6 employees per hater.

Northern Rock has 6 haters and 6400 employees (source Wikipedia). That's 1066.7 employees per hater.

Both have around 1000 employees per hater so I'd say they're about the same.

I decided to do Barclays as well (cos bank with them). They have 176 haters and 134,000 employees (same source). So that's 761.4 employees per hater. That's worse than HSBC and Northern Rock! (The fewer employees per hater, the worse it looks for the bank.)

What a great way to spend a Sunday night...

This could run and run;) ;)

On the same criteria as the first of the OP's list

    I hate moneysavingexpert 36,300
    I hate banks 1,140,000
    I hate the English 2,120,000
    I hate the Americans 3,870,000
    I hate everyone 3,930,000

    I hate work 46,800,000

Presumably this shows we hate the Banks but we hate work even more:o

In order to get a proper comparison figure for Lloyds you would need to do a logic search on Google using what is called boolean algebra.

Lloyds is not just the name of a bank, it is the name of an insurance company and could name various other things.

So you would need to search for "I hate LloydsTSB", and "I hate Lloyds TSB", (and possibly other variations) then work out a way of subtracting the overlap. I could work out the equation and how to write the search URL but I cant be bothered to be honest.
