Conventional Boiler Advice

Hi,

I have a very old (20+ years) Glow-worm hide away floor standing boiler. The boiler is a bit of a pain to get at as I have to pull out the washing machine to get to it but it is out of the way and as I have only had to do this each year for servicing it is not a problem.

I recently signed up with Eon for some boiler and central heating cover but was told that they couldn't cover me because the heat exchanger is leaking. They said they would not be able to repair this and have given me a quote for a replacement combination boiler which comes to £2587 incl. VAT.

As I have heard that some people are not happy with their combination boilers and I would have just preferred that the boiler was replaced and kept in its original position, the Eon guy said that it was illegal now not to have a boiler put up on a wall.

I will of course be ringing round some Corgi guys to see if a) they could just fix the existing boiler and b) how much they would charge but before I do could anyone tell me if it is correct that I could no longer have a floor standing hide away boiler and whether I have been given correct information in that a 20+ year old boiler could not be fixed.

Any advice would be most welcome.

    Hi

I would suspect a boiler of that age would be obsolete. If the heat exchanger is gone then it would also be an uneconomical repair to most Corgis ,even if the part was available.
It is not illegal to fit a floor mounted boiler ,if you can find one. It must be condensing though.
You do not have to fit a combi.
If I were to look at this job I would strongly recommend the boiler be more accessible.
As you say a second/third opinion will give you more of an idea.
