Good afternoon: Frankenberger and Phil99...have you found the 'ignore' feature? I find it comes in handy but the problem is, it restricts you to 20 odd names so after a few more weeks on here you'll run out of space;) BTW, with you 100%.

i run my own painting and decorating business, and i'm reading this in utter disblief.
"so sorry didn't realise self employed meant claim every benefit going, don't pay tax, national insurance, vat etc then still expect to be paid the same as the next man. Because you have no safety net."
we have no safety net yes.
we don't work we don't earn. we don't get holiday either or sick pay, i presume you get all benifits going ? i wonder if you've ever pulled a sicky ? would that make YOU and benift cheat i wonder.
don't pay tax, is every tradesman crooked ?? if so what circles are you moving in to know bent tradesmen? i've been in this trade for 15years and i don't know a bent tradesman, just normall blokes trying to earn a living.
as for tax, i pay my tax in a lump sum every year and it works out a hell of lot more than what you would pay in a year because we are tax on "profit" not what we take home in a month.
i also pay VAT which is around 4k every quarter
nearly £200 a month in public liability alone
PAYE, NI,rates, van insurance etc etc etc..........
if i was pricing up and you offered to pay £80 a day i would have told you where to stick it.
just don't run to the big boys when things go wrong.

let's not forget those lovely customers who think nothing about keeping you waiting for weeks for your cash once the job is completed , try doing that at tesco's0
-
yeah, you know they are waiting for the end of the month.
a company i subby out to are 60days, which is just too long imho, but it's good money so....0 -
Update - he started today and i have now asked him to do living room too. Didn't mention price but when he left tonight he said he would knock the price down to £70 a day result:j .
All you who poured out sob stories about being self employed and how hard you have it , if you had read my 2nd post would have seen I am self employed. So no I don't get paid for sickness or holidays and I pay my taxes at the going rate. I also get clients who try to drag their heels in paying.
Also he gave me a price I didn't offer him it.
Out of interest why do tradesmen never accept cheques ?
0 -
Because half the time they bounce.0

Decent tradesmen do accept cheques. I have even started taking Debit and Credit cards. Decent companies who pay takes etc will not worry how they are paid. If they are only working for cash, then you should probably leave them well alone.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

i don't touch cash as they always think if they pay cash they do not need to pay the VAT.
cheques are all i use for small clients
BACS for the subbying out to big companys0 -

Good afternoon: The increasing number of rogue customers has had an impact on how my OH accepts payment i.e. long-standing customers can pay by cheque while new clients pay cash (stage payments) or with building society cheques/bank drafts, an unfortunate consequence of attitudes/behaviour in today's society. He is not VAT registered, issues receipts and invoices, files with HMRC, notifies his installations to Building Control through CORGI, always adheres to Building Regs/'Best Practice' despite having to compete with the cowboys who are invariably cheaper and has been self-employed for over 20 years....strictly his/our experience, others I am sure will disagree;)
