    Why do you need vista?
Laptops are short on resources compared to a desktop and vista is resource demanding.
Did you know about windows 7? The next microsoft dollar-making product that has been brought forward to 2009 because vesta is carp?

your best bet is to delete the xp partition after booting from the Vista cd, and starting from scratch.

(I'd take xp over Vista any day imho)

when you run the vista from the CD at bootup (select 'Boot Menu' - usually an F key like F12 - at the BIOS screen), it loads various files then it will display the area of the hard drive where XP is installed. You can select that area (the partition) and delete it, then create a new one for Vista to be installed in.
