  • You can cliam until 31st August after the child's 16th birthday.

If the child continues in full time non-advanced education or an approved training course you can claim until the day before their 20th birthday.

If they leave school and register with a careers service such as Connexions you can claim for an additional 20 weeks.

what is non advanced education ?? does college count as this ? thanks
  • Non advanced is the equivalent of NVQ level 3 and below.
Must also spend 12 hours+ per week in an actual educational establishment.

my son wants to go to catering college would that count ??
and if he lived in at the college and came home at weekends would i stop getting my claim.
    thanks
  • You can still claim if he lives at the college as you would still be expected to provide some financial support for your child.
You need to find out what the qualification would be at the end of the course. As I said, as long as it is the equivalent of NVQ level 3 or below this would be fine.
  • Just a point from recent experience, whilst you can claim family allowance upto the day before a "childs" 20 th birthday, ctc actually stops on the day of their 19th birthday even if F/A is still being paid
I`m 100% certain of this as last year my daughter was 19 in febuary whilst still at college full time,at that point her ctc stopped but the f/a continued until the last monday in august and shed left college in june
