Hi
Ok, basically my after my c loads up its goes to a black screen just before windows loads up. I 've tried booting up from windows cd but still doesn't work, it goes to that same black screen, same with F8, safe mode etc. I tried ubuntu, linus cd and tried installng that but half way through installing that my pc just switches off. Do i have a faulty hard drive? Any ideas?
Thanks

When you tried to use Ubuntu, would it run as a LiveCD? If not then it's ~probably~ not a hard disk problem, but some other hardware fault - possibly a memory problem.
To rule this out, boot from the Ubuntu CD and choose Memtest. If it passes several complete cycles of that then it's fair to assume that the memory is ok.
If Ubuntu runs as a LiveCD, you can check your hard disk integrity using GPARTED, which can also correct any errors it finds in an NTFS (or pretty much any other file system) volume.0 -
If its turning off it can normally mean power supply is going OR its overheating so the pc, this has happened to me a few times and sometimes you can smell burning.
What you want to do is leave it in the Bios overnite and see if the computer is still on in the morning, if its not then your almost definitely have a hardware problem.0 -
Have you tried to enter bios and reset to failsafe defaults?
Next check your power supply.0 -
Thanks for replies.
How do i run as live cd please?
It maybe PSU, but how i check this? It only started switching off when i tried to install ubuntu to clear the HDD data and reinstall windows again etc, but not before hand. Before it would just go to a black screen and nothing would change this even in bios.0 -
Put the CD in boot from CD then click launch live CD.
The best way to test if its hardware is as i said, go to bios and leave it on, it it cuts out you know something is wrong with the power.0 -
Thanks, shall i leave it on bios and leave it running overnight? If it switches off, then i have PSU problem i'm guessing?0

what make/model is your PC and monitor? When you say your PC switches off when loading windows, is it just the monitor, or does the base shut itself down completely too?IT Field Service Engineer, 20 years with screwdriver and hammer

The base was made by a local shop, monitor is a packard bell, the base swithces off when trying to install ubuntu or black screen when loading windows, but monitor stays on.0

when you say 'monitor stays on' does the light on the monitor stay green? No 'No Signal input' message on monitor?IT Field Service Engineer, 20 years with screwdriver and hammer
