Books for donation

Hi, I have a large quantity of mainly hardback general fiction and some reference books that I would like to dontate to a charity (about a pallets worth). These are left overs from a book shop. Theyre second hand but not in bad nick, book club editions though so not very valuble. I have taken some to my local charity shops they take them but are not too happy cause they say hardbacks dont sell very well.
Does anyone know of an organisation that would want these? I can deliver them as I have a van but would have to be on a weekend.
Thanks

Your local hospital or hospices might like them. I know when I (or relatives) am in hospital I always end up having to buy books or get my OH to go to the town library for me as the quality of the stuff in the hospital library is pretty poor. ......Not another Mills and Boon !:o

Old folks homes might apprecaite them too, but would probably prefer large print.

As it's coming up to summer, there might be local organisations having fairs or fetes that would appreciate things for their bookstalls. Ask local churches, schools, village groups etc.

You can always put them on ebay and give the proceeds to charity.

If appropriate I'm sure the local schools would welcome the reference books, if not have you tried the local library? Our library sells older editions of books and 'gift books' to buy new ones.

Would you be very kind and click on the below link to find out if there is a Breathe Easy group near you please?

I know our local one will collect books, cd's and videos to sell in order to raise funds.

The British Lung Foundation is one of the few charities which don't have shops, so often these groups set up a stall in local hospitals one or two days a week to sell the donated items.

    Thanks.

    :T Thank you so much Seashore321 :A

I just wish I'd known about the group. My late Mother was an avid reader, they could have raised loads of money with the hundreds of books, novels and tapes/cds she had. Everything was given to raise money for another (probably oversubscribed) charity.

We`re lucky as our local Co-Op and the local D-I-Y Store( Homebase ) have Charity Bookcases standing just inside the store where book donations are most welcome..

They nominate a Charity , every year I think.

The last one was Alzheimers at the Co-Op and a local hospice at Homebase.

A good idea that ought to be encouraged countrywide.

I `ve found that most of the normal Charity Shops ask far too much for their books, resulting in many of them being unsold and skipped away to the book-trade .

With these ordinary bookcases , they don`t charge a fixed price but invite a donation.
No doubt many are taken for a minimal donation , but it does mean that there is a quick turnover of books. In fact , despite regular book donations ( and I`ve seen ALL the shelves packed on a Friday) , by the following week some of the shelves are very sparce.

It must be quite good as they post annual totals of money collected of £1500 -£2500...which is worth having
  • What about your local blood donor centre? Mine has a book sale shelf for dontion to the Red Cross but don't ever have a great deal of books on offer - more of bring and buy I think.

    xx
