I pay quite a lot for this insurance through work and have never claimed.

You clearly have considerably more money to spend than we do! (If you are paying a lot of money out and you don't know what it's for.)
It's private health cover.
You need to get a copy of your employers policy to see what benefits you are paying for, as different employers make up their own schemes, arranging the cover from the varous options available.0
