Can someone tell me how I password protect a scan of a credit card sent as an email attachment. Thanks

Embed the picture into a word file, then password protect the word file.

Wouldn't public key encryption be more appropriate in this case?

The Word technique is the most inefficient and insecure of any options. Embedding graphics en Word is very inefficient, and using the security is a waste of time.

Public key would be best. But isn't straightforward for novices.

My simpler option would be to compress it into a Zip archive using the current version of WinZip which has 256-bit encryption... (free trial from their website). But you'll still need to give the password to someone in some form, to open it...

AxCrypt would probably be better; it's open-source and free... but as you say, that still leaves the issue of getting the password to the recipient.
