couple of annoying things since ive moved into my own place
i set the heating to come on for a couple of hours before i get up, easier to get up if the chills taken out of the room!
anyway when it comes on theres a knocking noise and it oftens wakes me up. could this be air in the system? or something else? i'm gonna buy a key for letting the air out and try that.

try bleeding the radiator first - if this doesnt work the pipe is probably knocking against something - very difficult to trace and resolve - if it isnt too bad id suggest just leaving as it is0

It could be the copper tubes expanding with the heat and rubbing against something.
The usual culprit is where the tubes are clipped to the joists or are tight against other tubes or joists.
The only cure I have found is to try and track down exactly where the noise is coming from and have a look, it is usually from under the floor.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
thanks luckily the pipes are along the wall so i can easily check if they are knocking together as its a concrete floor. i'm just looking for the little tool which bleeds the radiators.. is there a name for it ?0

It could also be your central heating pump. Ours used to wake me up in the morning too (an odd noise), then it went and the banging sounded like the boiler was about to explode!
Fitted a new one (Dad is plumber - very useful), and it is much, much quieter. They are quite expensive though, our new one from Wickes was cheap at about £50 ish.
If you know a plumber, you could get him to drain some of the water out of the pump, this can help to get some of the black stuff out which is what usually sends them to their grave.
This is what I mean by the pump, it is next to the boiler...
