Computer slow to boot up and connect to internet

Hi

I have a PC which is 4 1/2 years old.

I have virgen broadband and use their PC guard anti virus and firewall.

I have run virus scan and it says its clean, also checked hard drive and only 1/4 full.Broadband medic says connection working properly.

But this am, got up turned Pc on and it took about 10 mins before everything up and running.

I am running windows xp-home if that helps?

When computer is on- it is ok most of the time but sometimes freezers and is slow to switch between windows.

Any ideas on what I can do?

have you tried turning off/uninstalling PC guard to see if its the cause ??

If you have not already done so download and install HijackThis

But internet explorer keeps having a problem and closing.

Normally I am kept signed in to MSE but had to re sign in?

What is the spec of your PC? IE CPU speed and RAM? I think most of your resources are probably in use by unneccessary startup items and toolbars.
