plastering ceiling over paper?

My son has just moved into a flat where all the ceilings are lined. All bearable condition except one bedroom where the slightly textured lining paper has opened up in one place to a length going out about six inches from the wall. I havent dared touch it as think its been painted a no of times and too brittle to try to stick down. Any ideas? Would I be able to flatten it if I wet it? I cannot imagine trying to get lining paper off ceiling completely - would an option (expensive though) be to try to pull the loose stuff off and then have the ceiling replastered over the topof all the rest of the paper? Or wouldnt that be possible?

Help!

  • I would say no to plastering over paper. This is because of the weight of the plaster pulling the paper off and the moisture would end up soaking into the paper and causing loads more problems than it solves.
If i could i would, but i cannot so i wont, but maybe one day i will.

If you want to have the ceiling skimmed over you have 2 options: 1, take all the paper off the ceiling, pva it and the skim it. 2, if you don't want to take the paper off, then you can over board it and skim it that way. You cant not skim over paper. 1 st option will be you cheapest.

    thanks for quick replies..
any way I can try and stick it down?
6" length of lift a bit of exageration probably - I wonder about coving? Or would sticking that on maybe be difficult when lining paper is old and painted over?

Right you remove paper by wetting it yeah!

Plastering it will mean its wet for 48 hours or more.

Your new ceilling will suddenly become your new carpet :)
