Buying car without logbook

I have recently put a deposit with a Toyota dealer for a used car. I was due to collect it soon only to get a call saying they had lost the log book and will have to wait for a replacement/duplicate logbook from the DVLA. Does it matter that it is not the original logbook.
Or should I just ask for my deposit and waqlk away!

Is there anyway a duplicate logbook may be used to hide that a car has had one owner?
Anyway what is themain purpose or use for a logbook!

I should think that they would apply for a logbook in your name, should be no problem but DVLA will send a letter to the previous owner to confirm change of ownership. If the previous owner confirms change of ownership or they do not receive a reply within a certain time (not sure exactly, but it's only weeks) they will issue a new logbook.

If the dealer applies for a logbook in his name first before transfering ownership to you, it will add an owner to the total. You need to confirm that they will not do this.

Once you have signed, you enter into a contract with the dealer and will be difficult to get you deposit back and walk away. If the dealer registers the car in their name, however, I would argue that the car is now not the same as it was at the time the contract was signed, i.e. one more owner.
