    Ronben,

This is a home user we are talking about and most home users walk around on carpet in socks. Why do you feel the need to undermine one of the principles of component installation?
  • I zap myself fairly frequently anyway, so for the sake of 2 quid I'll invest in a strap ;)

    Thanks all

    I'm a fool quite often :D
  • Now now ladies and gents, no need to fight :p

Last silly question - the upgrade is just a simple swap, right? So the old bit is no use to me. Do I need to "wipe" anything off it (as in, it's a form of memory, but it doesn't really store anything IYSWIM) before I chuck / give it away?

Lest you think I'm a complete retard, I did successfully put in a whole new CD-RW drive to my old computer :D with a toolbox consisting solely of a hairclip... :o i thin I'll be ok once I've read up on it, so thanks for helping me out :T

Just remove it, there is nothing to erase from a memory chip, it's contents are lost when the power is disconnected (there are some scientific technical anomalies to this, before someone jumps in, but nothing you need to worry about). So swap in the new memory.

To earth yourself, without buying a strap, leave the PC plugged in, but switched off, then it'll be earthed. When open touch the metal sides of the PSU (power supply), and you'll be earthed.

Now let's wait for people to jump in and say that's dangerous!
