I have just put my car reg it google and was surprised to see it for sale for several thousand pounds on this site:
http://www.nationalnumbers.co.uk/
As the vehicle is registered to my OH with the V5 in his name, and currently in the process of being restored Im very curious to know how this site can offer a reg thats not for sale. We have owned the car for almost 5 years.
Any one explain this?

It'll just be a case of someone desperate for a reg goes on that site, registers their interest then the site phone the reg mark owner offering £xxx0

Interesting. I'd be well peeved to find someone offering my reg for sale, when they do not own it to sell though. Surely there's some law against advertising something for sale that you do not have in your posession? Or advertising someone else's property for sale?
I wonder if there's any way of getting recompense from the company advertising it via court etc?0 -
Who says the're offering anything for sale?
I had a quick look on that site and the plates the DVLA currently have are offered for sale, and anything else you can just enquire about0 -

well, they have a price next to it of £4,500, and it says:We have offered the seller of the plate ****** the price of £4500.00, which is based on the amount we aim to return to the seller (on finding a buyer), plus our commission, and are waiting for them to respond to the offer.
We have had no offer, the car has been off the road for several years, and I am rather peeved that they can advertise our plate for sale when it isnt, nor will be any time soon.0 -
Dont forget - you dont own the registration - it is merely on license from the DVLA. If you read ther T&C's of DVLA cherished numbers you will see - especially the disclosure on misrepresentation.Praying at the church of MSE should be compulsory!
There are three types of people in the world, those who can add up and those who can't.0 -
This is quite common practice in private number plate industry - a bit like estate agernts putting unwanted for sale signs outside houses not for sale
Personally i think its highly illegal- but it is probably covered by some ancient obscure medieval 12th century eccelesctical act or some sort of other legal twaddle0 -
I would be going ape!! I say ring them up with a fake name asking about buying it, see what they say, and weather you get a call from them regarding you selling.
Its only the same as someone advertising your car for sale, when you still own it, that would be seen as being very dodgy :eek::eek:0 -

Wonder what would happen if you expressed an interest in it, and "accepted" the offer of money when they get in touchI wonder if you could accept the money and then not buy it or transfer it to them. :rotfl:

Hi all. I came across this thread while checking Google for number plates stuff. I represent a personal number plates company (not the one mentioned), and thought I might be able to shed some light...
It's possible that one or two companies may knowingly post registrations for sale, but I'd be surprised if many do. Partly because they'd run the risk of getting slated in forums like this one. They'd have to be a bit silly.
The only situation I am aware of which can cause us to list numbers for sale which, in fact, are not for sale is when the "owner" puts the number for sale with us, but then sells it independently without telling us. In that case, we would be unaware that the plate is no longer for sale and would probably continue to advertise it until someone tipped us off.
I really can't think of any other way that our company might find itself in that situation. I can't speak for the others, but I'd imagine their situations are similar.
We certainly wouldn't intentionally run the risk of alienating potential customers.
That said, if you've owned the car for 5 years then it really is a bit strange that no one has ever gone back to the previous owner with an offer, or to ask him if the plate is for sale! So it's odd that the plates company hasn't sussed that the plate is not for sale. Doesn't make a good impression, admittedly.
Thanks for reading.0 -

A passing thought: is the car SORN'ed, you might have "lost" the plate otherwise.0
