I would expect any good garage to let you know that a cam belt charge is required. IF the cam belt does go, it can cause an unbelievable amount of damage, which could end up costing you almost as much as the car is worth. Probably to the garage's advantage, as they'll charge you lots of money...

Good for you for not going back to that garage!! Ask around and get friends to recommend another one for you to use.

They should have called you at least, if not to prepare you for the shock but to see if you wanted it fitted as you may have been able to get it at a cheaper price
