Experian error

in Credit cards
My bf hasn't been in control of his finances and I've decided to help him. The first step was to get a credit report from Experian. It's come back with a score of 999!
We cannot believe that this is right. His credit worthiness is such that his Mum had to get a loan out for him not long ago as he couldn't get one. He missed payments for a mobile for about 6 months. He has paid it off now, but I was under the impression that this sort of thing stayed on your record for some time and seriously affected the score.
He doesn't have a mortgage or anything, but has loans and he pays them monthly.
By contrast, I've had a mortgage for 7 years, never missing a payment. I have 4 credit cards for different purposes (Sainsburys for shopping, full balance paid monthly. Nationwide for travel, when I use I load it before travelling. Post Office, just taken to replace Nationwide. Marks and Spencer, 0% for furniture and min amount paid monthly).
I have never been in debt and never missed a payment on any household bills.
I'm on the electorcal register, which my bf isn't.
My score last time I looked about 6 months ago was around 870.
He has lived at his current house for about 1.5 years and the previous one about 5 months. I've lived at mine for 2 yrs and 6 yrs at the previous one. None of this adds up.
It seems impossible that his score is this high considering the above. Do they ever make errors? If so, we want to be able to get the £6 or whatever back that he paid for the report so that we can check with another credit ref agency.
Unfortunately at the moment the area where you view the details of your report isn't working, but I'll keep checking.
Anyone ever had experience of Experian making a mistake?

Was there any bad markers on his file? The bad data might be with Equifax.Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0 -
Experian only hold data they are given by lenders.
What 'data' is on his Experian report? ie...
Is he on the Electoral Roll?
Are his previous addresses shown?
Is the mobile contract listed, along with payment history?
Anything else listed?
As you may have gathered, the "scores" are meaningless and are not worth paying for.0 -
Of course they could have made a mistake - everyone can.
I don't know the detail of how Experian apply the score but I do know about credit checking and not having much credit history will make a difference as well as not being on the electoral roll. Things do stay on for quite a while but to be honest the score Experian give will only be an indication of his credit-worthiness. When you apply for credit with a specific company it will depend on their own specific criteria as to what they look at and how far back they go.
I would suggest that you wait until you can view the details of the report and then you may see things on there that aren't correct. You can then write to Experian to challenge them. They will update information if it is incorrect.0 -

Thanks. Finally been able to check the report in detail. Seems he is on electoral role. Had about 5 addresses in last few years, a couple of late payments and nothing else to note.
Seems bizarre that his score would be that high.
Anyway, thanks for your help0
