Tax Rebates?

My o/h is due a tax rebate as hes been charged emergency tax for a while, does anyone know where we can claim this FOR FREE? i looked on the web and there only seems to be businesses that charge you for it.

Thanks for any help.

PS: I dont know if this is in the right board or not :A

can you not get in touch with your local tax office. I claimed my tax back after I only worked part the year last year and made a quick phone call, they sent out a form and filled it in and sent it back and a couple of weeks later got my cheque. It really was very simple to do myself. Also been on emergency tax before and had cheques just sent to me for the tax rebate a year later or so although I wouldnt count on this I was probably just lucky.

If it is in this financial year, it is likely to come through his salary, in that future amounts will be adjusted to reflect the overpayment.

If it is from a previous financial year, then as MERFE suggests, contact the relevant HMRC office (or look at www.hmrc.gov.uk, you can download the form there) x
    Gone ... or have I?
  • I have claimed tax rebates directly for several years.
I simply write a short letter with my national insurance number on it, saying "I believe that I am due a tax rebate for the last tax year. Please could you review this for me." You also have to send any P45s or your P60 for that tax year. Send this to your local tax office (found as dmg24 suggests).
    Your documents will be returned.
Usually I also work out beforehand exactly how much I am due, so that I have an idea what to expect (and also so that I know that I haven't underpaid!)

Just because he is paying more than someone else doesnt mean its wrong.

Checking with your workmate is not the way to see if your deductions are right

    What is his tax code?

Which means he isnt getting any allowences.

Once his P60 comes (take a copy) send it to HMRC with a covering letter and they will send a cheque for any rebate owed.

Just be aware that this can take 6 weeks or so at this time of year.

On his payslip there may be his PAYE reference number which will be three numbers/code, if not ask him to contact his payroll department for the ref.

These three numbers denote the tax office which deal with your hubby.

Call 0845 3021467,quote the ref and ask for the relevent address.

All you need to write in the letter is:

    Dear Sirs

PLease find enclosed my P60 for tax year 2007/2008. I believe that I overpaid tax and would be grateful if you could look into this matter at your earliest convenience.

    Yours Faithfully

    Mr alison999

PS ~ You MUST send the original P60 but dont forget to take a copy :D
