My daughter has just recently moved from Leicester to County Durham. She moved everything in 2 big Luton Vans with 3 men and it cost her £800 from a company in Coventry.0

I paid £360 to move last summer from Yorkshire to Kent. I got rid of most of my stuff as I was moving to a 2 bed house. We used a local firm in Yorkshire and fitted it all into a Luton van, but used one of the larger type lutons. That cost also included 2 men. This was the best move we have ever had. The men were brilliant, really good at fitting it all in the van and very happy people. Nothing was broken or went missing in the move, which a first for us. I gave them a big tip.
We have moved all over England and used big name firms and had them pack for us too, but no firm have ever been as good as this last move or as cheap. I found them in the yellow pages. I wish I had kept a note of their name and number because I would like to use them again even though I don't intend to move back up north again.RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

brummybloke - I am indeed giving some items away to neighbours etc
I haven't aquired too much junk though. My council charges an arm and a leg to dispose of even a single item.
I think when you have white goods + bed + tables + sofa etc it starts to feel like a lot to move, even though it might fit in a Luton, I dont know. The problem is I am disorganized + not much time to do it... if I pay those big guys to do it I will feel they're taking the pressure off me. Well, for that price I would hope so.
MissMoneypenny - sounds like a bargain! can't work out the distance, quite a long way I think.0 -
When I moved, I had 3 grand plans. All crashed and burned:
- have a House Goods Sale. Nobody came, even though I advertised it via ebay, a notice in the local shops and a display advert in the local newspaper
- arranged the charity shop to come and take what they want. They turned up and said they couldn't take much as they were full
- arranged a house clearance man to take everything that was left. He was a no show, took 4 hours to get hold of him, he said his van was broken down and could he do it the following week, I explained that I was moving OUT the next day, so no... and he suggested I pile it all in the garden (that'd be great for the new people!)
So, success is down to your local area general response, opportunity and reliability of people.0 -
I'm doing the exact opposite - we're moving next week from Lancs to Berks

I got Pickfords in for a quote, expecting to be gobsmacked by their expensive price, and in fact I was gobsmacked by their tiny price!
They won, hands down, their quote was only £850, wheras the closest competitor was £1350
They're only doing a fragile pack (kitchen breakables and picture frames), I'm packing the rest myself, it's a 3 bed terrace and we have a lot of books and a huge kitchen so there's a lot of boxes.
Price is collect from our house, deliver to store, store for 1 month, deliver to Berks, unpack breakables.
I was well chuffed!
Give them a try.

Whereabouts are you moving to? There are a couple of reputable firms up here. Andrew Porter is one. I've had friends use them and although not the cheapest are very good. Just an idea!
Good luck with your move.
