Cambelt change on Suzuki Vitara - home service job?

Just need to pick your brains here...

I've got a 96N Vitara (I know it's silly, I LIKE it, OK? :D) and it needs its cambelt changing.

Bearing in mind that between me and my dad I've got access to a fairly extensive selection of tools, plus his experience at home servicing (he used to change the belts on his old Nissans and Toyotas when I lived at home) is changing the belt something that we can do ourselves? Or is it one of those annoying jobs for which there's a special tool that only Suzuki dealers have?

I'm just thinking an afternoon of getting covered in grease is worth it if it saves me £250.

Ta muchly, anyone who can advise.

OP

An utter berk, 2010.

No - you won't need to go to a dealers - as we could do it at our garage - but that is as far as my knowledge goes.

You're braver than me - good luck!

Try Suzuki forums or if there's a haynes manual printed...

Not a job you want to make a mess of though tghat would be expensive.

Of course, as long as they have the knowledge and expertise. Recommend purchase a cam belt kit and not just the belt. And have a good look at the water pump too while in there - see if there are any water stains or evidence of leaking.

Is not always the right answer if a specialist tool is required which is either trade only or costs an arm and a leg.

Just remember to check the timing at least twice and rotate the engine a few times WITH A SPANNER and then check the timing again before bolting it all back up.
  • hi all.
does anyone know if the 03on model diesel engine has a cam belt or is it chain driven?
also is it fitted with a dual mass flywheel?
