Lo Cost calls to the UK from Spain, does anyone know any providers?

Options
Does anyone know any lo cost tepephone companies like 18185 etc in Spain? Calling the UK from Spain is expensive compared to 18185. I am unable to get internet access due to my location in Spain so Skype is not an option. I have been told about Direct Telecom but I wondered if there are any others that may be cheaper?

I know there are indirect access providers in Spain (like the 1899, 18866 we have). They use 4-digit prefixes in the format 10xx but, at the moment, I can't get Google to find me any.

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Thanks, this reducitel is very low cost, trouble is I don't understand how to use or join it? I think you dial the access number but wont that be as expensive as dialing direct? If anyone uses it can they let me know how it works?
    Thanks

    Thanks

You dial the access number, then when prompted dial the destination number.

Prices are in Euro Cents per minute including VAT. No Other charges apply.

UK Landlines are 2c/min off-peak and 3.3p/min peak.
UK Mobiles are 4c/min off-peak and 6.7p/min peak.

    Peak hours are Mon - Fri 08:00 - 20:00.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

Yes, no need to join anything, and the 901 or 902 call charge goes on the ordinary landline bill with no separate account needed, like an 0844 call does here

In fact, I hadn't noticed the 0044 site's (mentioned by utilitybroker) charges, which are the same as Reducitel, and you have the benefit of more explanation in English

0044's explantion of how to make calls is a little confused though:
    How does it work?
    1. Call the 0044 access number
      • Dial 901 900 499 for UK landlines.
    2. Dial your desired UK number
      • At the voice prompt press 0 and then the full number including the international dialing code (0044)
    3. Talk for as long as you want!
    Call Costs
    Calls to our 901 900 499 number cost 2c/ min off-peak (Mon-Fri 8pm-8am) and 3.4c/min peak (Mon-Fri 8am-8pm), plus a connection fee of 4.2 cents.

All charges exclude IVA (Spanish VAT) which is currently 16%.
    Example (Calling UK)
If you wished to call the following number, 01926 132 456 from a Spanish landline you would dial:
    901 900 499 then at the voice prompt 0044 1926 132 456.
Do you have to dial that extra 0 or not?

  • Hi,
We set up an account with Voipstunt for my mother-in-law to use in Spain.
10 euros gives us 250 mins a week for free for 120 days (it deducts 0.05 as a connection fee)
You go to web site and put in landline numbers and then phone rings.

If you prefer to have the calls billed to a separate account, I find Nonoh (http://www.nonoh.net/) works well. You have to initiate the call via their website, then they call you back on your number in Spain and connect your call through to the UK. You can buy credit in advance on your credit card, which gives you free calls to certain destinations for about 4 months.

You can use it by dialling an access number in Spain but in practice you will probably pay as much dialling the Nonoh access number as you would to use some of the services recommended above.

Those reducitel rates are very cheap... thanks for that tip!

While these calllback services are useful for some, the OP mentioned no internet access

It's possible to use a mobile to set up callback between 2 landlines. Useful when visiting somewhere, but for use with one's own landline it would get more complicated * to do it any cheaper than using those callthrough access services.

    * e.g. use Voxalot mobile callback with a Betamax brand like Voipcheap or Justvoip
