URGENT! My kodak memory card is saying it needs formatting, but I will lose all pics

Thank you that is very helpful aswell, you guys are great

I'm pretty sure it happened though because I left it in the reader while I switched the PC off, then merrily took it out the next morning I think it was when I noticed, I have done this in the past with no problems, but could this be why it happened??? if this is the case is it damaged beyond repair??
I doubt very much that the card has been damaged from being left in the PC. I have had customers in the past that use kodak products that complain of this error. I dont know why it happens but it does, especially with their SD cards.
Try recover my files or there is https://www.giveawayoftheday.com and you can use the data recovery software that they sometimes let you download from there.Scrimping and saving!0 -
You asked for URGENT help "Any help most gratefully received", so have you tried any file recovery software yet? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

I have been following all the options and looking at the links for the software posted, and think they too complicated for me, I'm just not confident with computers AT ALL. I don't undertand them and the technical terms whatsoever ( i don't even know how to burn things onto discs!), although my knowledge has slightly improved thanks to yesterday's posts. Just when I start to think I should go for it, I get another little nagging doubt in my mind, that I really am not the best person that should attempt this, and something that is so precious to me, really should be left to people who know better!
There have been a couple of very kind offers from a couple of people on here, which I am still considering, depending on what happens with the local guy who we should be contacting today via the camera shop in a neighbouring town.
I put urgent in the title as obviously I went into a blind panic when I realised what had happened, and what pictures had been lost. Been walking round in a bit of a daze, as I can't think of much else at the moment!

I don't see that you have anything to lose! You simply install the software recovery program and then let it do it's job. Others have had good success using these programs.
I very much doubt if the camera shop would be able to do anything for you, they are basically sales people and probably less computer literate than you! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

I know, I just want to give it the very best shot at rescuing them!!! I'm sure the others who have used them in the past have had at least some idea of what they are doing. I really need an idiots step by step guide to things like this! and someone there to back me up if I muck it up!
I don't know if using this software means the card will work as normal, or it finds the pictures and I have to save them on the computer and then transfer them, which I certainly don't know how to do!
As soon as the card is put in the reader then I get the pop up about it needing formatting, so I don't know how the software will override it, or if I do end up having to format it, in orde to recover it from there, then I will most probably completely mess that up! If I could do a practice run first with something else I would have had more confidence!
The guys in the camera shop have the details of a person locally who does work for people, they don't do it themselves. I think he is probably an independant guy, but just a regular in their shop, perhaps who they have gotten to know or who they pass things over to that they can't do themselves??0 -

So how much are they going to charge for this service that you can easily do for yourself? I would not trust anyone else to 'have a go', if these pictures are as valuable as you say they are! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

The problem is I don't trust me to do it!!! lol I'm not entirely sure, £60+ odd quid I reckon, it's with the guy now (hoping and praying it doesn't get lost!)- he said it will be about a week    it's money I can't afford, but a small price to pay I think for him doing it properly rather than me loosing them for good.
You guys on here have made me more confident it can be rescued though, so a massive thank you for that :T :T
Just got to hold my nerve and wait for a phonecall now
think I should get myself more clued up with computers while I wait!! and the first thing I will be doing is backing up all my other things I own. At least i have taken that away from it all.
Thank you to everyone that took an interest and replied. Hope to report back with some news soon xxxxx0 -
If he charges more than a tenner he's seriously conning you. It's not a particularly technical job, you just need the right tools to do it. My offer to do the job still stands if the other bloke can't recover them for you."A nation of plenty so concerned with gain" - Isley Brothers - Harvest for the World0

Thank you Grade A Reject, you are a star!
The card is with him now, I think they said he charges by the hour, and also to do with how much memory space he is recovering?! it was a 512 card so not the biggest! I'll probably pay way over the odds for it, because he'll have basically seen me coming, and know I don't have the foggiest and in my desperation will just cough up the cash! (even trying to win a vodka flavour competition's prize money to help me out with paying :rotfl: even though my partner said he'd pay, I kind of feel responsible!! ) He could well be on this board offering advice and I would never know
I hope if he doesn't manage it, he doesn't muck it up for us to try as I would like to take you up on your offer then!, only problem being it would have to go special delivery etc and I would have to send you some cash to send it back special delivery, plus that inconvieniances you having to go to the post office for me! ( that's why I didn't snap your hand off when you first offered!!)
I feel a lot calmer about it now, only thanks to you lot on here, although still have the odd wobble when I think of something else that was on the card!
I'll keep in touch xxxxxxx0 -
Hi Lucy
Try to do it yourself with all the help and suggestions here.
Why not do it on another card, borrow or buy a small capacity card, put some piccys on it and generally delete them and use the recovery programs and learn how to do it first then use the corrupted card and get them back?
Good luck, Lucy.
opps only read the first page, not the second....
Anyway do you still have the harddrive that you say failed with other pics on it, these can be recovered too you know?0
