Moped - set-up and running costs?

Hi
I currently have a provisional licence, and know I can't afford to run a car. However it would be useful to have some form of "commute-ability" beyond public transport.
So I'm thinking moped.
Am I right in thinking that you can drive one, with L plates, after the basic test (control, steering, braking etc- I've forgotten the proper name!)
Also if anyone has average running costs eg insurance, petrol, and how far they travel on this, that would be really useful.
And a rough price for the actual moped?
Thanks

If you are 17 or over, I’d suggest buying a 125 Scooter, you can ride this after passing CBT.
The insurance will vary from area to area, but if you bought a new normally insurance for the first year is included.
A scooter will normally do 60+ mpg.
Personally avoid the cheap Chinese bikes and go for a Gilera/Piaggio or Honda
Second hand £500+, New £2000 with a few goodies thrown in, if your close to Watford visit Piaggio Centre in Brickett Wood0
