dvd recorder advice

I recently purchased a new lcd samsung tv with built in freeview. Before that I had tv, set top box, vid and dvd recorder. So now I have tv with freeview. I set up my old dvd recorder but it will not record only play. I realise this is cause it is analogue and will not recognise the digital signal but it will not record even when I try to record one of the 5 analogue channels. So I am considering buying a new dvd hd recorder or a pvr. I like the look of the pvr but will be unable to play or record onto dvds if want to keep. Is there any way I could purchase a pvr and still use my old dvd recorder somehow? I would also like somehow to keep my vid and copy all my old videos onto dvd. Sorry if this is a bit of a waffle but any advice would be appreciated cause although I have done a lot of reading about everything it seems to be a pain to have all this equipment that i cannot not now use so is it worth ditching the old stuff and updating completely or faff about trying to get all the old stuff to fit in with the new! Help appreciated - thank you.
