Dog Barking Problem

Hiya
Im hoping for some advice for my mum and her dog. He has a problem with barking in that he does it all the time, any noise he goes mad barking and if mum leaves the house he goes mad again barking. I think he's about 4/5 years old now and she's had him since a puppy. She's moving house in the next couple of days and is worried about the barking and has been looking into things to try and stop him doing it. She's mentioned an alarm?? that she has seen in Pets at home store but says its about £80 and has asked me to have a look online for her for something to help.
Just wondered if anyone had any advice or if anyone has used anything like one of these alarms that has helped
Thanks

Im just wondering has he been with only your mum since shes had him?
maybe it is more a distress thing that she is leaving him? Has he ever been taught to be left on his own and then gets dstressed when he does.
Is he a rescue dog? - a previous dog we had (who unfortunately we had to return after he turned on us) use to howl constantly if we left him (which would of been ok if we didnt live in a flat and he was a breed otehr than a bassett hound so you can imagine the noise! . Whereas the jack we have now barely makes a peep unless the door is knocked or hes dreaming.
perhaps hes bored? or doing it for attention if he gets a response from you or your mum whther its shouting at him to be quiet etc it is still attention.
Alternatively you can get things like this
http://www.primrose-london.co.uk/anti-bark-collar-p-2299.html
which the odg wears as a normal collar and when the dog barks it emits high pitched frequency noises which the dog finds irritating and it distracts them from what they are doing. Then when the dog does bark reinforce with a stornger 'NO' and the dog will associate barkign with the irritatin noise and the word command.
its alot cheaper than an £80 alarm too!Time to find me again0 -
Hiya Sammy
those collars look good and certainly cheaper than the £80 alarm she was thinking of getting! thank you for the link
Mums had him since a tiny pup so since he was about 8 weeks old i think. He's a patterdale terrier so I dont know if that makes any difference. He has always had a bit of a barking problem when hearing noises or if someone comes to the house but he sems to be getting worse and goes crazy when mum leaves the house. There has been a big upset recently and my mum and stepdad have split up and mum is having to move into a rented house which luckily the landloard has allowed her to take the dog with her but she's really worried about all the barking and the effect on the neighbours. I think he's being a bit possesive of mum which is why he's barking loads when she leaves the house but she needs something to help him stop doing it
Il mention the collar to her tonight when i see her, thanks again0 -
If he's barking loads when your mum leaves her house then he's suffering with separation anxiety, hope this link helps!

Our 2 dogs dark when they hear sudden noises at home, to stop them barking we use a 'leave it command' (then praised them strait after they've stopped when we first trained them, so they realised they had done good)0 -
We have a lakeland terrier cross and we got him from a rescue centre when he was 2 1/2 (he is now nearly 9). The reason for him being in the centre (we were told) was that his previously family had split up and the wife could now longer cope with him - anyway since we have had him he has always barked - at the phone ringng, someone coming to the front door, when next doors dog barks, when we have visiters and they are leaving (he doesnt like that) when we leave the house unexpectedly (when we go to work he goes and sits in his bed and we dont hear anything from him
). We have tried everything .... collars whic we have hired from the pet shop that squirt when he barks (he just stands there barking at the collar until all the stuff runs out
) shaking a bottle with a few stones in the bottom (supposed to distract them) .... the only thing that seems to work is when I shout louder than he can bark:rolleyes:
I will be watching this with interest

Plastic bottle with marbles in, shake at the first bark, worth a try, it worked for my dog, followed it with telling him to go on his bed as this distracted him further xx0

I have found that the cheaper copies don't seem to work. The aboistop do work and although £80 if it does work it is worth what it saves in stress.Help me to help you :santa2:0
