16+ when do benefits end?

Does anyone know if child benefit, child tax credit etc. ends on the 16th birthday or when they finish the academic year?

Thanks.

    Acaemic year normally, they can run up to age of 19 if still in non-advanced education.

    So are parents entitled to benefits for their kids up to 19 or does the benefit go to the child direct?

    Parents are entitled to child benefit up to 19 provided the child is in full-time education. It doesn't go to the child.

    The child benefit entitlement only ends if they start either claimimg independanly on benefits themselves,or they start full time work,theey can only do this anyhow when the official date for leaving school which i believe is something like the last sunday in july.You can however still claim c/b till the last sun in aug if you are contributing to them still,its sort of to help people out,but they cannot be claimimg benefits.If the child is going into further education you will be sent a form from them asking you tick the relevent boxes and state where he/she is to attend.You can find all this on a very good website,like the .gov ones.

    If the child leaves school after their GCSEs then it stops at the end of August that year.

    If the child stays on at college, then it can run up to age 20 (if they are still at college until then - eg. if they do a resit year).

    If they leave college in May/June (at the end of the year) then it runs until the end of August.

    Just recieved my letter this morn after this thread posted.It is as follows;

    You can continue to recieve c.b for a young person aged 16 or over if they are in full-time educ,or approved training,or they have registered with the careers or connections service.

    Your child can leave school before 25th august 2008.If they do leave before this date they may be able to continue to pay until the 31st august 2008.

    If the young person will continue in full-time educ or start approved training,after 25th aug,then you will have to tell them.You will continue to recieve the c.b payments as usual.

    You must however notify them if the child is to do this as this is your responsibility,the payments will not be payed after 25th august unless you tell them.you can ring them 7 days a week 8am-8pm 0845 302 1444.

    Hope this has helped.

    If the young person is not doing any of the above then you need do nothing and the payments will stop automatically after the 25th august.
