Is £20 per head expensive?

Hi, I'm using a caterer which the reception venue advised for my sit down meal. All along I've not known a price for the meal as the lady at the recpetion venue told me that the caterer said she couldn't give me a price until she knew what everyone wanted. So I sent out the menus and have got some of the replies back. I sent her a couple of examples, and the caterer came back and said that roast beef would be £20 per head. Now this is only for a starter and main course! I decided to have wedding cake as dessert to try and cut down the cost.

My dad's advised me to ask a couple of other caterers what they would charge and then maybe change. Do you think it's expensive? My Aunt said that she would pay for it (before we knew the price), but I think that's a lot to pay. There are 26 of us so that's £520!

Any opinions?

    That seems reasonable to me.

Don't forget you're paying people's wages, not just for the food!

How much would you want to be paid personally to cook and serve dinner to 30 people on a Saturday and then clear up afterwards?

For 50 people including basic drinks package we are paying £50 per head next year

I think that's reasonable. I was quoted £21.95 for a 3 course sit down meal but because I have 70 guests we decided to go for a hot buffet instead at £13.95 per person.

I'm paying more than that too so I'd say it's reasonable :) I think we're paying about £42 per head in a few weeks time... Ofcourse you could pick a cheaper dish? I take you're picking just one main dish? If you are having more than one then I think it's extreemly reasonable!
As mentioned you're not just paying for the food, you're paying for wages too as well as all the costs associated with making the food and serving it. Personally I don't think it's very expensive at all...
I know it can be done much cheaper, but I think you'd have to do it yourself...

We're having a 3 course meal and drinks for about £33 per person. It depends on the quality of the food and the waiting staff. But it certainly wouldn't hurt to ring round a few other companies to check their prices.

  • 20 a head? blooming heck, mine's costing 95 quid a head (it does include all your alcoholic drinks though). Mine is a bit of a posh black tie wedding though.

Damnn wish there was a kosher caterer in London who did 20 quid a head, cheapest i've heard of is 65

Ringo, the first place I rang wanted £120 per head for a minimum of 80 people

Our wedding is not so posh!!!

£20 a head is very reasonable. Think about how much you would spend for a nice roast dinner in a restaurant, or at a Sunday Carvery. A 2 course meal for that price is not bad at all.

  • It is a reasonable price. Its just when you add up all the costs not cheap to get married. Smile sweetly at your Aunt when you tell her the price, and perhaps buy her some flowers as a thank you, make her feel a bit special;) Have a great wedding:D

Crikey I'm out of touch with prices! It really does sound reasonable when I see what some of you are paying!

I did tell my Aunt that I would pay some towards it. It's the last thing on the list to sort out now so the sooner it gets done the more relieved I'll be!

Thanks all for your input

Mines £45-£51 per head depending on what main meal they choose, so yes, £20 is very good value!!
