WI FI Erratic

Hello
Couould anybody possibly provide any advice.
I have a PB laptop with integrated wifi and a few months ago the housemate purchased a wireless router so he could use the cable and I could use wi-fi.
The wifi has been fairly erratic and finally purchased an upgraded router. This was fine but due to various problems I took it back to PC worlds (poor battery life etc).
However, when it was returned it was fine and I have been connecting via wifi with a few drop outs but not much.
However, today the wi-fi would not find my SSID and basically died so I have been working off a cable whilst I tried to set new channels, disable and enable SSID, reset etc etc. I read all about 2.4ghz phones and more.
I came across a forum http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=82988 that noted that it could be something to do with the power save settings. Eventually, I simply unplugged the mains power to the laptop, ran it on battery so that it was in power save mode and there it was. The wi-fi now appears to work and everything. Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions as I am very, very puzzled (not to say irritated too!!! as it's been like learning a whole new language:o)
