The knocking noise when the heating system comes on is just the pipes expanding as they heat up. The way to solve it is to place cotton wool between the pipes and their supports.

I have tried that, I put pipe lagging round the pipes under the floorboards, it got better for a while but it went back to normal. I see a lot of modern systems the plumber now uses thinner pipes to the radiators.

  • By thinnner I assume you mean 8mm or 10mm versus 15mm?

    Basically because

    a) - more efficient (less water to heat) and quicker responding (for same reason)

    b) cheaper because of the price of copper

    AFAIK
 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.
