Remove Mcafee via your add-remove programs and download/install AVG antivirus and antispyware. Look for a free firewall too if you don't trust your inbuilt one. AVG is 100% free and updates/scans daily.0

You need to ensure that once you have your new chosen anti virus you remove your old anti virus properly - I will hunt for the removal tool for you.

You could install spywareblaster - this sits in the background and does the following;
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.

Oh, and it's free0
