Fraudulent use of ebay acc, my acc now suspended

Hi,
First I have to say that I love ebay. I have bagged some great bargains over the last few years and sold quite a few things aswel. I recently tried to log into my account only to find that I was blocked. I went to look in my email account that I use for ebay, yahoo, to see if there was an email explaining why this had happened. I was blocked from using my email account as I had "changed" my password and other details. Which I had definately not. After sending numerous emails and receiving nothing back apart from automated replies from both yahoo and ebay, I finally managed to get into my yahoo account. Apart from 1 email all the others had been deleted, my address book wiped clean. The remaining email was from ebay to tell me about a honda car I had recently sold!!!!! What???? Yes a Honda Accord apparently, dont know how much it went for or even what colour it was but it would appear that I have sold one. It did tell me my new name,I am now a Mr Szatmari. Well I am most definately all woman, well at least last time I looked.
What I cant understand is how this happens, surely there must be some way these companies can check things out when someones details are drastically changed, including countries, and yet they wish to keep the same ID.
When things are finally sorted out with ebay I will continue to use it, but will be more aware of the pitfalls.
If you are reading this with a new Honda Accord on your drive that you purchased of ebay, please dont come to me asking about spare parts, cos it wasnt me!!!!

Hi Ticketyboo,
The only way someone else can gain access to your account is if you have made it insecure. This can be done by not logging out properly on a shared PC, like in a library or on an office computer which means someone can use the history tab and get back into your account and change all the details.
Or, you can have an easily hacked password, someone on another newsgroup I frequent had her account hacked as she used very similair passwords on a common theme and someone hacked her maliciously.
Or you have fallen foul of a phishing e mail, confirmed your details on an email or through an unsecure link.
Even though you sorted it all out with ebay make sure you let your bank and card companies that you use with ebay know that you may have compromised your security in case the scammer got to those as well.
It is very important to be extra secure on ebay, we get lulled into a false sense of security sometimes, not bothering to change our passwords often enough, or not logging out properly.

Hi
Yes you are both correct, firstly some poor chap somewhere will be sat with an empty bank account thinking of where he could of visited in his new car, I only wish I knew who he was so I could email him and explain what had happend, not that I think it would be much compensation but better than nothing.
Soo you are right about the phishing email. I received an email saying that ebay were do a check for security matters and would I log in via the email to confirm my details.
I can only live and learn and definately say never again.

Apparently there is a fair bit of account hijacking going on at ebay. One bidder I corresponded with told me he bought stuff of this seller via his website where he had to register his details, stupidly he used the same email address, username and password he uses for both ebay and paypal and .......... you guessed it, the seller accessed both accounts and ripped him off!
There's a moral there somewhere :-/
