  • I like it :D

I would probably say soft fruit. It always costs a lot to buy and one plant gives a lot of fruit for not alot of effort IMO

Veggie wise though, maybe something like rocket or pak choi?

If you've got the right conditions for it, I would say rhubarb. We inherited a rhubarb patch when we moved in here 20 years ago and it's gone from strength to strength. In fact I dug half of it up and handed it out to around 10 freecyclers last autumn. We like to wander round the fruit aisles of supermarkets tut tutting over the price of rhubarb and working out how much our patch is worth.
Also Tuscany black kale which I grew last year and was very yummy, but I think commands a premium price in the shops

Having read the other posters I can only agree, rocket & rhubarb, both easy to grow and how on earth do they justify prices?

One to add would be runner beans, always expensive & normally tough old rubbish in shops

If space & time permits then purple sprouting broccolli, again alway produces but marketed as special with price to suit

Have you seen the price of pak choi seeds???

I picked up a pack yesterday while at the nursery and didn't realise till I got home they cost £3.99

I just hope they all germinate for that price, although it should still save me money from buying it at the supermarket as it's not cheap there either ;)

Salad leaves which does include Rocket.

You can grow them indoor and out so they are great for people without access to gardens.

Growing it also cuts down on food wastage as you only need to cut as much as you want to eat at the time instead of buying an entire bag from the supermarket and binning most of it as it's gone rotten.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

How about mange tout? Very tasty and productive, often commanding a high price. I love it because if you grow enough you can eat them all summer.

Also, because you eat the pod as well you get quick and consistant results. You have to keep picking though, if one pod on a plant goes to seed properly then it stops flowering. Can't let that happen wink.gif

I grow loads in a metre square!

The best veg to grow for saving money are those you like lots :)
It's no good just picking the easiest to grow if you don't like it?

I inherited Rhubarb, which grows away quite merrily and produces lots....but I don't like it. It's one of my giveaways.

Have to agree on Rocket, if you like it, but keep an eye on it because if you don't pick it, it will run to seed.

If I had to pick one it would be Dandelion. An acquired taste, but sooo useful, and you can't get much cheaper :) The French used to cultivate it.

:D I dont like veg at all. I hate them. I throw all green things into soup preferably, or into salads and then cover them with dressing so I dont have to taste them! I want to try potatoes in a bin but also some wee rows of veg, just to prove I can.....So I will look fo these you've given me. TY.
Next door has a huge rhubarb patch, they give us some.
