15 x 15 Lounge
12 x 10 Bed

    Burton / Derby area.

I realise that there is going to be some variance but need to get a base figure for the budgeting process. I am going for reasonablyu plain style. I have currently estimated carpet and decor at £5K. Really need to get under £4K. Carpet Quote is around £2000 - £2300 from Allied.

Is there any way of recognising a quality decorator (apart from no paint stains on cloths)?

    Cheers.

  • Short of seeing examples of their work (eg. from neighbours etc), then word of mouth is probably the next best thing.....again, your new neighbours may be able to recommend someone. Always better to ask around than to pluck random names out of the phone book.

But be dubious of anyone who 'cold calls' at your house (leaving advertising cards/leaflets etc).

If it really comes down to picking numbers out of the phone book, then I would recommend getting approx 3 quotes (good advice for any home improvements/maintenance), as you may find the prices will vary substantially. This will also give you an opportunity to weigh up the person yourself and decide whether you trust them or not.

A friend has just had a quote of £3000 for painting inside her 3 bed semi in London. I know the decorator and he does a good basic paint job which is all she wanted
