We've exchanged & set a completion date- can I plan the move now?

We have exchanged & set a completion date of 2 May. A couple of questions...
1. Can I plan the move now? (ie furniture, boxes, van etc)
2. We need to buy a fridge freezer & a washer & dryer. Do we need to order in advance or will a Currys type place deliver the next day? Obviously we need these things immediately upon moving in.
Thanks!

Until you physically have the keys then the purchase is not complete.
If you have a tesco extra near you; you can buy all your white goods from there at reasonable prices; and you can take them home the same day.0 -

Once exchanged, even if your buyers die they still have to buy your house.
So yes, you can plan everything about your move.
However .... in a SMALL minority of cases.... very unusual, but I've seen it here, there are actually sellers who don't understand the concept of "It isn't your house any more, get out now, it's mine, you have my money" and people have even turned up at their new house with the van on completion day (after funds were paid) to find the husband sat watching TV and the wife's out shopping!
So just check you aren't selling to loonies who don't know.
If you want to get stuff out of your house early and buy new things, you could take on a self-storage unit for a week and use that as a flexible space to put things into if you want them but aren't ready for them yet.
Good luck.0 -
wow! that's a long time between exchange and completion. i've never had more than a week and normally it's been 1 day. i even once had simultaneous exchange and completion. You have to plan for the completion date. One piece of advice I would give, from bitter experience, is don't plan to complete on a Friday. If things go wrong, you're potentially homeless for the weekend (I was). If you complete on a weekday, the worst that can happen is that you are homeless for one night.
And before you ask, no I haven't used that solicitor again!!!0 -

Well it is on a Friday but we are the buyers, not the sellers- we're living with OH's mum so we won't be homeless if something happens with the dates.0 -

OK, well hopefully we're not buying from weirdos... the main thing I was trying to sort out was the logistics of it all... we have zero furniture, and to get the best deals we have to order online... which gives a 2 week window for delivery... so I was trying to determine whether I can order the stuff now and arrange for it to be delivered on 2 May (completion date).
We are going to Ikea on Saturday for the 21% off & will have flat pack boxes stacked to the ceiling at OH's mum's house!0 -

Probably best not to arrange delivery for 2nd May. Completion isn't normally until early afternoon, and it would be awkward if the goods turned up in the morning.
Good luck with the move:j0 -
If your living with parents, can you arrange delivery for the Sat or Monday? Its not like you have no where to sleep is it. Might give you a little time to do any work required too.0

comet online will let you select a specific delivery date for your ordersIt's a health benefit ...0

Yeah, get in and scrub it from top to bottom. Cos no matter how clean the other people where, your standards will be slightly higher in one particular area than theres, and if you are really unlucky, you can start the fumigation process with removal men.
If you want to save money, then buy as little as you can now, as when you are in, you will decide you don't like things, they don't fit like you thought, you want other things. The amount of furniture we donated to charity shops when we had our first house was huge. Get the essentials, take advatage of the ikea sale, if you have the space the floor to ceiling wardrobes will be the best thing you've ever bought, but keep the receipts!.
and don't forget to leave a bottle of what you fancy handy for the first night (and a corkscrew, glass, toilet roll etc) Ooh, and unless you really want the neighbours to be very friendly terms, bedroom curtains.0
