B&Q Select Kitchen

My parents are currently trying to replace their decrepit kitchen and after trawling around with my mum (oh joy!) she finally decided that she wanted the B&Q Select one. Designer came out and we planned the design/appliances etc and she asked for it to be fitted by B&Q for speed/ease as their both disabled and can do without having to deal with trades etc.

They had the prefit survey done which threw up some issues - kitchen needs rewiring, pipes for the boiler moving etc and this increased the cost to a whopping 10k for a 9x9 kitchen!!!! Bit shocked at this as it doesn't included floor levelling, tiling or plastering - me and OH will be ripping out the old kitchen and I've got a mate doing the flooring.

I was wondering how much the daily rate for independent kitchen fitter v B&Q - I reckon the kitchen units might be about £3,500-4000 and the appliances £1,200 so its a considerable amount for fitting.

I run Maintenance Company in Essex and have numerous appaling stories about B & Q Fitters. One customer paid B & Q £2200 for the kitchen and a staggering £3300 for fitting. This was the fitting only - no plastering, wiring, plumbing etc. After 13 months B & Q still hadn't completed the fitting and they are now communicating through solicitors.

I worked out that for £3300 I could remove the old kitchen, fit the new one, plaster all the walls, tile and decorate and still make a good profit.

I have not heard any decent stories. Bear inm mind that B & Q don't employ electricians etc and will only subcontract the work and mark up their prices.

My kitchen fitter charges £200 per day, the plumber and electrician £180, tiler £!50.

    Hope this assists.

From somebody who was put through 12 months of hell after making the mistake of giving B&Q my money to fit a VERY expensive kitchen. DON'T

By all means buy a B&Q kitchen but find somebody who knows what they are doing to fit it for a sensible price.

Having got through 4 separate B&Q subcontractors (and it was still never right) one thing is clear regarding kitchen fitters.

Those that can have full order books.

Those that can't work for B&Q

i'll follow up with networkguy's comment and say even if your thinking they can't be that bad dont go with them to get it fitted and also if possible dont organise anthing untill you have recieved it all.

I used to work for B&Q as a manager and the amount of complaints i had to deal with relating to Kitchens and Bathrooms was unbelievable. It's generally not the fault of the staff in store it's the central distribution team who mess it all up.

And the fitters are just poor quality as well
  • Whatever you do, please don't use BxQ's fitters...we have heard nothing good about them, ever.

I would seriously rethink buying the kitchen from there too...BxQ are a bluddy nightmare.

You should maybe also compare prices from a kitchen manufacturing + fitting firm local to you. At least you'll be able to ask to see any previous installations and get an honest opinion from previous customers. Try and talk your Mum and Dad into looking elsewhere...you may be pleasantly suprised.

Again, if you do have to buy the kitchen from BxQ, DON'T use their fitters. Please. :o
  • A local joiner will fit kitchens at half the price of B&Q who are well known for rip off prices, also Howdens kitchens are fantastic value and a fantastic company.

We used jcjoinery01@yahoo.co.uk for fitting our kitchens he manchester based and i was impressed with his work.
    Found him on Ebay..

My kitchen supplied and fitted was half the cost of b&Q...
