Probiotic.....nonsense?

Options
Well I used to think they were nonsense. Then recently I've been poorly and needed a course of antibiotics. One side affect has been an upset stomach and pains etc.

I've tried the Muller Vitality probiotic yogurt drink for the past few days and have been very impressed with the affect it's had on my stomach. It's not the best tasting stuff but it's well worth it........in my opinion.

If you're faced with taking a course of penicillin/antiobiotics, these probiotic drinks might speed your recovery too.;)

my dad does too, he has a hyatus hernia and reckons they help immensley.
  • My experience too is that after using antibiotics I suffer digestive problems and probiotic drinks and foods help.
Generally though the advice I have been given is that these provide only one or two of the kinds of gut flora needed for healthy digestion and who is to say that those one or two are the ones you're actually lacking day-to-day. A broader help is to buy organic anything you eat the outside of (apples, lettuce etc) and washing them only, of course, in water. The little "bugs" which haven't been killed by insecticides will benefit your guts more.
If you're really into probiotics then Kombucha is a good natural alternative to the commercialised ones like Yakult etc.

lidl does big bottles of probiotic yoghurt drinks, i'm sure they'd work out much cheaper than buying those piddly little bottles from the supermarket.
  • I swear by Actimel, they really help keep the digestive system ticking over nicely.

MATH - is it easy to make HM pro-bio yoghurt? I've never made yoghurt before but buying the premade drinks really eats in to the grocery budget.

I use them from time to time, just tend to get the ones on offer. But they're very good for girlies around a certain time if you catch my drift!

Perhaps you could check out the HM yog threads because all homemade yog has tons of beneficial bacteria in it which is basically the same thing and it is hugely cheaper.

I was amazed to find they put probiotics in baby milk these days, i think it is a brilliant idea, and especially when i changed my grandsons nappy when he had done a poo as there was very little smell.

I suffer from IBS. If I have a bad attack that doesn't settle, I find a couple of weeks on Actimel sorts me out.
Here I go again on my own....
