The sound on my PC has gone

I have been running a Sonic Fury soundcard for many years with no issues. Today all I get is a high pitched buzz/whine when I try to use the volume.

I've checked all connections, and no conflict is registered on the sound card.

Any ideas?

  • Try some different speakers, if you get no luck with that go into device manager. and check that the sound card is enabled. Also go to control p and volume settings, make sure everything looks OK. If non of this works try updating the drivers for the soundcard which will be on there web page.

A good place to start is to try using headphones. This will let you know if the problem is with the soundcard or the speakers. As Jamie said look for a new driver if it is the soundcard.

Ok, I've tried other speakers and still the same. I have the most up-to-date driver. I've run a check on the card and it's configured correctly. I've re-installed the sound card.

The only thing I note is an exclamation mark highlighted in yellow for communications port (COM4). Hardware conflict?

I had already uninstalled and reinstalled but did what you said anyway.

I disabled the communication port rather than uninstalling it as I'm not sure how to get that back.

On restart, it obviously found and installed the new hardware but still the high pitch tone coming from the speakers. Weird.

The only new software I've installed recently is itunes for my new iphone. I think the problem was already apparent before downloading that anyway.

    I'm at a loss.

Have you tried a system restore to a few days ago or before the noise was happening.

Start, Run, Type msconfig launch system restore, select a date.

Never used that facility. Should I give it a whirl?
