I cant beleive this thread! I'm very rarely on the side of LL's, but you lost the keys, so you should pay! it's that simple! and yes you need to pay for the LL's keys aswell, as they are entitled to have them and they shouldnt have to pay because of your actions!0

We did it not only to protect our belongings but also to protect her property. What if this bag snatcher had more intentions than just wanting cash or cards? What if they gained access to the property and trashed it or set fire to it in our absence?
I am aware this sounds like we're being paranoid but you have no idea of the capabilities of this psycho-stalker
Ohhh come on....
You lost your keys... you wanted to change the locks for your piece of mind... end of story... you can't hold the begger bowl out and expect the Landlord to pay for new locks when you requested them.
Hardly anyone 'burns a house down'... they are after YOUR belongings...
1. It was your fault
2. Your belongings
3. Nobody would burn down a house... its an extra criminal offence for no reason
4. Stalker is your own personal reason nothing in contract saying they have to change locks all the time... and the stalker wouldn't have a set a keys
I think your just being a cheap skate...0 -
Its like me smashing a window because i was late for work and needed the keys..
The end result would be the property being unsecure but I broke the window... so it was my fault.
Your lost the keys YOUR fault... YOU pay. Cheek...0 -
yes i agree with majority of posters however i think that you should have got quotes before having work done. If the ll called the locksmith then they should perhaps pay a percentage towards it as they had told you they was claiming on insurance and arranged locksmith.
I personally would have replaced lock myself and cut keys and given to ll
I know the only time i have needed the lock changing (key broke in door) the landlord said i could replace lock or he would be happy to

Yes, you may be paying towards the cost of securing her property but the property was secure when you moved in. You lost the keys (by theft or otherwise) and from the sound of it, you have more to gain by changing the locks to keep out the stalker.0

Hang on she didn't LOSE her keys they were stolen!
But either way I wouldn't expect my landlord to pay, sorry. The repairs are another story, maybe it's time to move?0 -
I don't get why you paid £140 for a locksmith. We were burgled a while ago (no sign of forced entry but before us the tenants changed every six months for about five years) and so I changed the main yale-style lock.
Cost of new barrel (wilkinsons) £4
Time to replace - 10 minutes max.
You didn't have to get a lockie in because, presumably, you still had your key to the door. So why didn't you, in true MSE fashion, do it yourself? We may not have it all together, but together we have it all

I'd expect to pay if it were me.
For anybody else reading, I've got the Endsleigh Tenant Contents Insurance. As part of that I chose to also cover my landlords contents (I rent fully furnished) and I also opted for the extra bit where if I am broken into or windows smashed the insurance immediately gets a little man out and fixes it.
I'd have let the landlord know but that's it. Wouldn't occur to me for them to pay.0 -

Rubbish, no they arn't!
They have no rights to access the property without the tennants consent.
The tennant is allowed to change the locks as long as they give the landlord the keys to the property when they leave.Bankruptcy isn't the worst that can happen to you. The worst that can happen is your forced to live the rest of your life in abject poverty trying to repay the debts.0 -
!!!!!!!!.. the landlord is allowed to give 24 hours notice... if you ignore it he can still enter HIS house.... This is how its always been for me as a tenant.. in the contract.
You can say no... but he still will have a spare set incase you loose yours.. or do a runner.0
