Insurance covering dental work?

I was wondering if anybody has come across any pet insurance companies that include dental care in their policies?

I have 4 pedigree cats, one of which will be going to the vets soon (when I've plucked up the courage) for a tooth removal and de-scale. I have been quoted approx £200 (with the emphasis on approx no doubt), so my credit card is going to take a hammering. I realise that if I was to change their insureres now, this work would not be covered anyway as it is a pre-existing conditions that the vets are already aware of, but it would be nice to know that the others are covered in the future. However, I don't seem to be able to find any company that includes any dental work with any of their policies.

Axa do as long as it is related to an illness or injury. 'What we will NOT pay - costs resulting from dentistry that is not related to an illness or injury'.

They also have one of the best levels of cover available £7000 per year each and every year, so 'life cover' for conditions unlike some policices which have a set amount per condition or will only cover the condition for 12 months. Another good thing about them is that there is a flat excess of £50 regardless of the age of the pet, a lot of insurance companies increase the excess to £50 plus 20% of the total cost of the claim when your pet reaches a certain age.

Most insurance companies wont pay for routine dental work, it would cost them too much. They will usually cover accidents eg fractured teeth.

We have Petplan insurance cover for both of our cats.

One of them had dental work last year which was fully covered by the policy. We even phoned them up to check and they cover all dental work that is medically necessary. The only think they don't cover is cosmetic dentistry, if you can imagine such a thing.

They do require that you have your pet's teeth examined yearly as part of a routine checkup. We have their middle policy (called Budget) which has lifetime cover.

Thanks for that- I will look into both Axa and Petplan and check that it's worth cancelling the policies I currently hold with Tesco.

£200 seems very expensive for an extraction and descale.
My cat was in the vet a few months ago for an extraction, polish, descale and it cost me around £105.
I'd try another vet - even if it's just for another quote.

Thanks Darich. I did that and they quoted £240!!!! There are only 2 vets in my town, and as I don't drive, I think I'll stick with the original one.

we're with E & L insurance and have just had root canal filling and an extraction for Floyd following him breaking his tooth on a stick. Waiting for them to pay up £1449 :eek:

One of my cats had a dental done and Petplan covered it. We weren't sure that they would but after speaking to my veterinary practice they did meet the claim
