Check your insurance details as they may have a nominated repairer, often autoglass, who you contact direct for an assessment and possible chip repair. If the chip can be repaired it will not cost you a penny, otherwise there is a glass excess to pay for a new windscreen.
You can book online here https://www.autoglass.co.uk/Book-an-appointment.99.0.html?&no_cache=1&et_cid=5&et_lid=5191
and this web site will also give an idea if the chip is likely to be repairable. The chip must not be in a region within the drivers line of sight or above a certain size to be repairable.0 -
if the insurance doesnt cover it, i used a ebay kit and was pleased with the results
tape over the chip to keep it clean until you can have it repaiered0 -

Here's a link to an ebay listing. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Windscreen-Chip-Crack-Repair-DIY-Auto-Kit-Car-Glass_W0QQitemZ260228158997QQihZ016QQcategoryZ72203QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I've used one of these kits and it did work. I'd try the insurance route if possible and preferably try for a new screen. Although the repairs are good, professional or otherwise, and the resin used has the same optical characteristics as glass, they're not 100% perfect in my experience.
I can sympathise though, I once drove a brand new car home and en route suffered the same fate. It's a bummer!0 -

I used to be able to spot where my chip repair was done, but never really notice it now. The slight distortion in the area of the chip left behind after repair is the reason they will not repair chips inside the drivers line of site, which is a vertical section of the windscreen above the steering wheel.
Bought my car new, 2.5 years old now and the whole front of the car is covered in a rash of stone chips. Gotta just shrug your shoulders and accept these things will happen. I'll get a respray to prepare it for sale sometime.0 -
I had a stone chip in my windscreen repaired yesterday by Autoglass however the stone chip is still clearly visable just smoother to the feel on the windscreen. I had thought that it would be nearly un-noticible - Is this right ???0

I thought this was why they don't repair inside the drivers line of sight, because they cannot guarantee the repair is invisible, depends on the damage.
Mine are still just visible but I would really have to look hard to find them now and the windscreen has survived a whole year with the repair now.0
