IKEA Kitchen with 21% off - worth snapping up?

Hi All,

OH and I weren't planning on updating our kitchen until next year, but are considering biting the bullet and purchasing one this weekend with 21% off at Ikea.

My question is, is it worth it? We plan on doing this as cost effectively as possible, and kitchens come on sale all the time, but Ikea kitchens seem to be very reasonable priced to begin with and with the 21% off even better.

Installation isn't a problem as OH's step dad is a painter/decorater by trade and has installed hundreds of kitchens.

We haven't really done much research on pricing as we weren't expecting to buy until next year, so I thought I'd put it to the forum - How do Ikea kitchen prices compare? Which is more cost effective? Would you suggest we stick to our guns and buy either a B&Q, Wickes, or MFI kitchen nearer the time during one of the many sales they have throughout the year.... or change plans slightly and get one on Saturday during the sale at Ikea?

We did our kitchen last year and had several quotes - one was from Homebase and was planned by their "in-store designer" and it was the worst kitchen plan I have ever seen - and it was expensive to boot!

We ended up designing our own and buying from Ikea, that way we got the kitchen the way we wanted and it cost around £800 all in with base and wall units, handles, sink and tap, plinths, worktops etc. DH (usually completely handless at DIY) fitted it and it was dead easy. My only small gripe is that all the units have a small Ikea logo printed on the underside but that is small beans compared to the amount we saved.

I would say it really depends on what you want. If you want to design and micromanage the fixtures and fittings then by all means go Ikea. :) We thought it was worth it and love our kitchen to bits.

I have an IKEA kitchen too, 2nd one I've had. The units are really robust and easy to fit, but the choice of sizes isn't great. Last kitchen had "Adel" doors, but my latest has "Tidaholm" which I think are a bit flimsy. So I'd go to the store (before 21st!) to try out.

But it took me ages to decided exactly what I wanted, so I'd worry that if you rush your choice and change your mind later you may waste more money than you save in the sale.

Even though Ikea has this 21% discount on this particular day you have to pre plan your designs before hand and pick the stock yourself .Ikea is more reasonably priced than any other but I would do a stock check before hand ,how disappointing would it be to have to travel to the store a number of times to complete you kitchen .

I've just downloaded the planner to try and sort mine out... was a bit disappointed with the functionality so I didn't get in all the units I've been after...

Price at the end came to £2,500! Think I'll stick to eBay...

As I am currently right at the crux of deciding about my kitchen, this sale has caused me all sorts of heartache. You are right, the choice of sizes isn't that great and try as I might, I cannot get it to fit my sink / washing machine and fridge freezer nicely into a row where I need them. I had looked at the Tidholm.. but since I have now decided on cream shaker, I cannot wait til Saturday is over to remove the temptation of buying something that will always be 'not quite right'......

Thanks guys for all your reponses - keep them coming!

I have just had a look on the ikea website and checked their terms and conditions regarding kitchens and the sale.

They have said the following regarding kitchens:

"Customers who are unable to complete their kitchen on the 19th April (due to increased sales volumes) will be issued with a 21% discount coupon (to allow the option of completing the purchase at a later date). Coupons will only be issued on the 19th april. Customers must return to the store and present the coupon between April 20th and May 4th to complete their transatctions. "

So, I will be rocking up to Ikea on Saturday with the aim on getting my hands on one of these coupons. This will give us over 2 weeks to plan etc.

    .....getting quite excited!

Ikea is usually busy enough on a weekend, it's going to be manic on sale day, hope Ikea are putting bouncers on the door.

The 21% plus the £200 appliance deal plus first transaction on an Ikea card (gets you 5% in vouchers) would be a bargain, if you know what you want!

Pity we've already paid for ours!!

Guess were I've just come back from.. :) got my family card - just in case.

Yes, also need a kitchen for my BTL . I was going to get a Howden one. Now Looks like the Ikea Aplad White (the two ranges below are chipboard, this is the start of the higher quality mdf range). I was not going to buy Ikea appliances, but at 0% interest over a year and 21% discount - better than Xmas sales.

Not too sure if I should buy the composite resin sink, or the cheaper Stainless one for the BTL.

They are open at 6am, and if today was anything to go by it will be packed. People were not buying big ticket items.

Isn't their delivery service exorbitant thought!
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)
