Online road-tax renewal - what a con

Just got my renewal form through and went to pay it online. £2.50 surcharge for paying online by credit card. I figure that's more than my 1% cash-back so I thought I'd check for debit card details.

It stated on the website there were no extra charges so I followed the payment link and enter the reference number and it lists my car registration details and then gives me the option to pay for 6 months or 12.

Just one problem. Both amounts were more than on the renewal reminder (as much as £5 on the 12 month option). Needless to say I cancelled the transaction at that point. Has anyone else experienced this?

You pay the amount the cost is now. The renewal reminder makes this clear if you read it.

Did you get your renewal before the budget? If so, and the price went up, that is why you were charged more.

    D'oh...

Yes you're right. The renewal arrived a week ago but I put it to one side because it says the earliest I could apply for a renewal is 15/4/08. Next time I buy a car I'm getting it in March ;)

the budget was 3 weeks ago, so surely if u got the reminder last week, the prices printed should have been correct.

How long do you think it takes to do a mailshot that large?

The prices printed on the Renewal Notice is always subject to change

    For information:

They are printed 2 months in advance. Approx 3 million per month go out. They get store by Royal Mail and delivered to keepers between 6th and 15th of month that tax expires.

And yes it does say in red letters that the price is pre-budget and subject to change!

For a proper scare, check out the new car tax banding post, which gives you a link to next years charge!!

Don't be shocked if it's £200 to £300 for next year!!
